Inform | Precautions for the Solar Eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024
On Monday, April 8, 2024, a partial solar eclipse will be visible in Calgary. The solar event will begin just before noon and conclude by 2:00 p.m., with the maximum coverage occurring at 12:43 p.m. We will keep all students indoors during class time, over recess and lunch breaks, and away from windows to the outside between the hours of 11:50 a.m. – 1:50 p.m.
Students must bring their lunch and snacks to school on Monday, April 8, 2024, as they will not be permitted to leave the school building during the lunch break.
We know that this provides a unique learning experience for students and staff in our school; however, there can be serious impacts to vision as a result of viewing the eclipse in an unsafe manner. During a solar eclipse, looking directly at the sun is dangerous. Safe viewing of the eclipse requires wearing specialized glasses or watching through a telescope or solar binoculars that have specialized lenses and should only be performed under the direction of a professional. Curious students may not fully understand the danger of viewing the eclipse and the potential damage to their vision caused by viewing the harmful rays of the sun. Viewing a partial eclipse does not cause immediate pain which would typically cause the viewer look away. Instead, permanent eye damage is sustained without any immediate signs, until it is too late.
For more safety information can be found on the NASA website or from the Canadian Association of Optometrists.

Weather Reminders
This time of year means the regular transition between warm and cold weather. Please help your student to come to school prepared for the weather over the next several weeks.
- Please ensure your child is prepared with outdoor clothing and footwear for all weather conditions.
- All students enjoy 20 minutes of fresh air at lunch (weather permitting) and some physical education classes outside and this time is much more enjoyable if they are dressed for the weather.
- Students should not arrive at school before 8:40 am
- Students must be picked up from school by 3:40 pm (There is no supervision outside these times.)
Athletics Updates
Please see the Athletics page of our school website for all Athletic Updates.
All students require proper footwear for physical education classes. Crocs, slides, and flip-flops are unsafe to wear when engaging in sports. Also, please dress for the weather as some physical education classes go outside when the weather is reasonable to do so with proper outerwear.
We look forward to another great week of teaching and learning!
Have a nice weekend,
Bob Edwards School
