Supporting Positive Behaviour and Student Success

We will continue to use our proactive and restorative behaviour strategies established at Bob Edwards School to support the inclusion, and well-being of all our students. We will continue to use our Student Office Referral system referred to as purple slips.

This work is guided by two of the CBE Administrative Regulations:

1.    Progressive Discipline

2.    Welcoming, Caring, Respectful and Safe Learning and Work Environments

The Student Office Referral (purple slip) assists teachers with classroom behaviour management and aligns with the school’s proactive strategies already in place at Bob Edwards School. Here is how it works:

  • Proactive support in the classroom: Teachers use a range of proactive, relationship-based strategies to support students in making positive choices, meeting classroom expectations, and remain engaged in their learning. The goal is always to understand the student’s needs, build on their strengths, and support them in successfully returning to learning.
  • Additional support when concerns continue: If a concern continues despite classroom-based supports, the teacher may complete a Student Office Referral (purple slip) and ask the student to meet with the Principal or Assistant Principal (AP). This step provides an opportunity for the student to receive additional support and work toward a positive resolution.
  • Problem-solving and restoring success: The Principal or AP will meet with the student to better understand the situation and continue using proactive, restorative, and supportive strategies. The actions and support provided will be documented on the back of the Student Office Referral (purple slip). When the student is ready to demonstrate the expected behaviour and successfully re-engage in learning, they will be supported in returning to the classroom. The teacher will be informed of the steps taken so that consistent support can continue.
  • Home-school partnership: At the end of the day, the Student Office Referral (purple slip) will be sent home with the student. Parents and/or guardians are asked to review and sign the slip and support their child in reflecting on the experience and identifying positive next steps. The student is expected to return the signed slip directly to the office the following school day. If the slip is not returned, the school will connect with the parent and/or guardian to strengthen the home-school partnership and determine any additional supports that may be helpful.
  • Suspension as a last resort: If a student is unable to re-engage successfully or their actions do not align with the CBE Code of Conduct, the Principal may determine that a suspension is necessary. Suspension is considered a last-resort response after efforts have been made to understand and address the concern within the school. When a suspension is required, the principal will contact the parent and/or guardian directly, and the family will receive a letter outlining the details and next steps. The focus remains on supporting the student’s successful return to school and learning.
  • Working together for student success: The ongoing partnership of parents and/or guardians is an important part of creating a strong, caring, and inclusive school community. Together, we can help build a greater sense of safety, optimism, pride, belonging, and place for all learners at Bob Edwards. Our shared goal is to ensure every student feels supported, valued, and capable of making positive choices and experiencing success.

Information regarding School Start-Up:

  • Homeroom teachers have contacted the families of their students via SchoolMessenger today. We know that this is a matter of great excitement for our students, and we thank parents, guardians, and students for recognizing and understanding that classroom placements are made thoughtfully and considering student learning needs.
  • At Bob Edwards School, we follow the CBE Traditional School Calendar.
  • Information specific to Back to School was posted to our website at the end of June: 2026-2027 Back To School Information.
  • Students in Kindergarten through Grade 6 in the CBE (Calgary Board of Education) have all their school supplies purchased centrally. This is paid for through the Student Supply Fee that parents are charged at the beginning of each school year. The Student Supply Fee for Grade 6 students for the 2026-2027 school year is $40. Families do not need to purchase additional school supplies for their children. Students and families in Grades 7-9 are responsible for providing their school supplies. Homeroom teachers have provided a list of needed supplies to you through SchoolMessenger. These lists contain all required supplies for the upcoming school year.
